Soaring Through September!

Here is a glimpse at what we have been up to during the first week of school!

As we come into the classroom during the morning we put our belongings away and then choose a morning center. Our options include activities that strengthen our fine motor skills.

During our literacy time we have been taking a closer look at letters. Earlier in the month we focused on recognizing uppercase letters.  Just recently we began our station work with various adults who are part of the kindergarten team. Mrs. Porter, Ms. E, Mrs. Beland, and Mrs. Luca will all be helping with our letter stations. So far we have focused on the uppercase letters D, E, F, and P.

We have been doing several projects about creating community in the classroom. We made hopes and dreams for our school year and put them onto hot air balloons so that they can soar off.
To help us think about how to work together as friends in the classroom we read The Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister and talked about how we can all share and be kind to others. We made colorful fish to hang outside of our classroom.

We were lucky enough to go to Riverview Farm and learn about apple trees and pick some apples for classroom projects!

We have been learning about the life cycle of an apple and doing many projects with our names and apples.

Using the delicious apples that we picked, we made applesauce in the classroom and then apple crisp in the forest. Here is a picture of "before", "during", and "after" our apple sauce taste test.

During our math time we have been learning about finger patterns from 0-10. We have practiced counting forward and backward within ten as well. Patterns and two dimensional shapes have also been our focus. Students have had the opportunity to go to stations during this time and practice using various math tools carefully. Some tools have included unifix cubes, pattern blocks, and polydrons.

Forest Friday is a great way to end the week. We have been enjoying snacks, adventurous walks, and finding treasures as the weather and woods change around us.

We have the chance to earn a "High Paw" anytime at school. When we do something especially wonderful in the classroom, whether it be a kind or helpful action, we can be recognized with the "High Paw". When we receive one we get to do a special handshake with Mrs. Newton. At the start of the year our whole class got one for having a stellar first P.E. class!
