Forest Friday, March 29th

"I hope to have good syrup." - Adventurous American Robin
"I hope to build a house." - Expert Eastern Red-Backed Salamander
"I hope to play tag." - Bashful Barred Owl

Our theme of the day was going to be about maple syrup. We were hoping to tap trees and have a snack that involved maple syrup!

Our walk up was a bit slick and our sit spots were very slippery!  Some of us were slip-sliding and struggling to stay in our spots.  It was actually a fun challenge.

During play time we found sawdust from some work that Mr. Clough did in the forest.  We put it to good use!  Mr. Sadowski put it around the fire pit so that it would be harder to slip.  Some of us made trails and roads with them.  Others used the wood cookies to make structures.

While the playing was happening some of us were helping to make pancakes.  We cracked eggs and mixed and they turned out very delicious.  All of us wanted some maple syrup to go with the pancakes.

We had a guest come to the forest with us today to help us tap maple trees.  Meg showed us the tools that we could use and the process of how to do it.  To tap the tree we used a drill, a spile, and the sap bucket and cover.  After we tapped the tree we could actually see small drips of sap coming out!  We're excited to see how much sap we have collected by next week.
